Engine Maintenance and Overhauls

  • In-Chassis Overhauls: A significant challenge in engine work is torquing main bearing bolts, which often requires a specific torque value followed by two 90-degree turns. Traditionally a two-man job, this can be completed by a single technician using a VT-1000 battery-powered wrench with a straight sliding reaction arm.

  • Detroit™ Approval: The Detroit™ special tools group has officially approved the Raptor RP-1000 pneumatic tool for several critical engine tasks, including the installation and removal of main bearing caps, cylinder head bolts, and flywheel bolts.

  • Common Application Points: Tools are frequently used on head bolts, main bolts, rod bolts, and flywheel bolts.

Suspension and Wheel Maintenance

  • Mack Truck U-Bolts: These bolts are often "torched off" at a cost of approximately $75 each because they are difficult to remove. The RP-3000 or VT-3000 can break these nuts loose—even those ten years old—saving significant time and money. While installation torque is 1150 lbf-ft, removal often requires over 2000 lbf-ft.

  • Suspension Components: Challenging applications include leaf spring U-bolts and general suspension bolting.

  • Wheels: Tools are standard for maintaining lug nuts on heavy trucks.

Trailer Maintenance

  • Trunnion Assemblies: These assemblies connect the two halves of a trailer. For Trail King Industries trailers, these bolts are tightened to 800 lbf-ft.

  • Efficiency Gains: Switching from a four-man team using cheater bars (an 8-hour task) to a TU Square Drive hydraulic wrench reduced the labor time to just 2.5 hours.

Specialized Fleet Maintenance

  • Aerial Ladder Fire Trucks: The spindle assembly bolts that allow the ladder to operate and turn must be checked annually at 500–600 lbf-ft. Using a TU-2 hydraulic wrench with an extension to reach these often-hidden bolts reduced the labor time for two men from 1.5 hours down to just 20 minutes.
