Key Solar Applications and Torque Requirements

The primary bolting tasks in solar field construction involve the racking structures that hold the solar panels:

  • Couplers: These components require a precise torque of 80 lbf-ft.

  • Pile Caps: These are torqued to 125 lbf-ft.

  • Slew Gears: The versatility of the tools allows technicians to quickly switch from a specialized solar arm to a standard reaction arm paired with a 1/8” Hex Drive to address these gears.

Preferred Tooling and Technology

The Volta (VT) series battery-powered torque wrenches are the preferred choice for solar applications due to their portability and repeatable accuracy (ISO 17025 certified).

  • Specific Models: The VT-500 (torque range 80–500 lbf-ft) and the VTR-250 (torque range 50–250 lbf-ft) are commonly used.

  • Specialized Accessories:

    • Solar Reaction Arm: A lightweight aluminum reaction system designed specifically for the geometry of solar racking.

    • Matching Cups: Sockets are paired with matching cups to ensure a secure fit on solar fasteners.

    • Safety: These systems are designed with no pinch points, enhancing safety for technicians working in the field.
