Overhead Signs and Lighting

The most common application in this sector involves the installation and maintenance of overhead road signs and light poles found along highways.

  • Mast Arms: Technicians typically utilize a variety of tools for these arms, including the TX-2 (low-profile hydraulic), TU-3 (square drive hydraulic), and the VT-500 or VT-1000 (battery-powered).

  • Base Bolts: These are essential for securing large poles to their foundations.

    • The standard procedure is to pre-torque these bolts with a VT-3000 battery tool.

    • Final tightening is performed with a hydraulic wrench to achieve torque-plus-angle specifications.

    • For exceptionally large poles, high-capacity hydraulic tools like the TX-8 or TX-16 are required.

Bridge Maintenance and Infrastructure

Roadway maintenance frequently overlaps with bridge infrastructure projects:

  • Splice Plate Bolting: Highway bridge sections are often bolted together in a shop and then delivered to the site for final assembly.

    • The TU-2 hydraulic wrench is historically used for this at approximately 800 lbf-ft.

    • Modern recommendations suggest using "Pistol Grip" tools (like the Raptor or VT series) to increase speed and ease of assembly.

  • Bridge Trusses: The RP-3000 pneumatic wrench is preferred for bolting bridge truss slice plates both in controlled shop environments and during field installation.

Public Facility Maintenance

Roadway-adjacent public facilities also require specialized bolting:

  • Waste Water Treatment Plants: Technicians use low-profile TX series tools (such as the TX-4) for bolting large pipe flanges in areas where space and clearance are limited.

  • Sheet Pilings: For highway embankments or retaining walls, specialized setups like the TX-16 are used to turn shafts against hydraulic nuts during the rolling and bending process of steel sheet pilings.
