CONSTRUCTION

WHERE OUR PROVEN BOLTING SOLUTIONS SET THE STANDARD IN CRITICAL APPLICATIONS

TorcUP tools are used throughout the construction industry for critical structural applications, bridge assembly, infrastructure maintenance, and specialized support equipment.

KEY MACHINERY AND APPLICATION POINTS

Building Construction and Production

  • Structural Tensioning: A primary application is the tensioning of structural cable systems, such as the Dywidag system used at the Calgary Courts Centre. Although the nuts were large (3 3/8 inches across the flats), they only required approximately 450 lbf-ft to properly tension the cables.

  • Concrete Production: In the paver industry, VT-500 battery tools paired with Socket-to-Socket (S2S) reaction arms are used to maintain Masa block-making machines. These machines require regular tightening of bolts in tight-clearance areas at torque values between 350 and 450 lbf-ft.

Bridge Construction

  • Suspension Bridge Cables: The TX-16 low-profile wrench was used for mid-span cable coupling on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Similarly, the TX-8 with an extended reaction arm was utilized for cable work on the Manhattan Bridge.

  • Sectional Assembly: Highway bridge sections are frequently bolted together in shops before being moved to the field for final erection. Historically, the TU-2 hydraulic wrench has been used for this at 800 lbf-ft, though modern "Pistol Grip" tools (like the Raptor or VT series) are now recommended to reduce assembly time.

  • Bridge Trusses: The RP-3000 pneumatic torque wrench is the preferred tool for bolting bridge truss slice plates in both shop and field environments.

Foundation and Infrastructure

  • Pile Driving: Companies like Geoquip and American Pile Driving (APE) use the TX-4 to maintain vibratory hammers. These hammers use 1" Hex/Allen bolts that often require between 2500 and 4000 lbf-ft to break loose, which frequently causes standard impact sockets to fail.

  • Waste Water Treatment: Low-profile TX-4 tools are used to bolt large pipe flanges in treatment facilities where space is restricted.

  • Highway Signs and Lighting: A variety of tools, including the TX-2, TU-3, and VT series, are used to install overhead sign mast arms. Base bolts are typically pre-torqued with a VT-3000 before being finished with a hydraulic wrench to meet torque-plus-angle specifications.

Construction Equipment Support

  • Cranes: The Volta (VT) battery series is used extensively for tower crane maintenance, often requiring specialized right-angle gearboxes to fit into restricted areas. For truck-mounted mobile cranes, manufacturers like Grove utilize the TX-2 for ring gear bolting, while Terex uses the Raptor 500 for inner rotation bearings.

  • Excavators and Dozers: Critical maintenance points include track pad bolts (using VT-1000 to VT-3000), track roller bolts (using VT-1000 at 500 lbf-ft), and undercarriage bolts for moving tracks in or out for transport (using TU-3 or SQ-3 at 1400–1700 lbf-ft).
